Othello is a tragedy set in Venice, Italy. Othello is a Moor and a highly esteemed general in the Venetian army.

When Othello promotes Michael Cassio to the position of lieutenant instead of Iago, Othello's friend and ensign, Iago is filled with envy and begins an evil and malicious campaign to bring about Othello's downfall.

Othello elopes with Desdemona, the daughter of a senator, and Iago constructs an elaborate plan to trick Othello into believing that Desdemona and Cassio are having an affair. Iago enlists the help of Roderigo, who is in love with Desdemona, as well his unwitting wife Emilia. Full of anger and despair, Othello accuses Desdemona of being unfaithful, which she denies. Dutifully she submits to Othello and he murders her. Emilia discovers the truth about her husband's actions and reveals this to Othello, who wounds Iago then kills himself. Iago kills Emilia and is then captured and led away. Cassio becomes the governor of Cyprus.
