This task can be used after viewing a production or filmed adaptation of the play. If you do not have access to a production, these questions can be adapted as a response to production images or online clips of scenes from the play. The important element of this task is allowing students to think about how performance influences an audience’s interpretation of the key characters and themes of the text.
After seeing a production of Henry V, or watching a filmed version, answer the following questions:
- What was the effect of the production design (set, costume, props, lighting) in this version?
- What was your opinion of the character of Henry in this production? How was he portrayed? How did the actor use voice and physicality to portray Henry? Did his character shift or transform throughout? Did your impression of him remain the same from beginning to end?
- The play deals with the rivalry between the English and French. How are the two sides portrayed in this production/film?
- What do you think the director of this production/film is trying to focus on or comment on, in their retelling of Shakespeare's play? What do you think are their key concerns?
- How do you think the director of this production/film wants their audience to feel, and why? Give examples from the production/film.
