Flattery & Faithfulness quarantini cocktail
Inspired by Ophelia’s meaningful floral gifts to the Danish court in Hamlet, this drink is lifted by the bouquet of the botanical fruits of your garden (or kitchen window herb garden). While Ophelia mentions fennel (for flattery), rosemary (for remembrance), and violets (for faithfulness and fidelity) among others, any herb will lift this delicate cocktail, while giving you the singular joy of enjoying the fruits of your labours.
This cocktail is essentially a long, spritzed Martini with a pisco punctuation mark. This drink can tolerate substitutions, while we love the Australian brand Maidenii’s Dry Vermouth in this cocktail, other vermouths will do at a pinch. The pisco is harder to replace, but a small touch of tequila or a bright eau de vie will give it the boozy backbone the drink is looking for. If you don’t have anything similar just omit the pisco, what you’re making now is a fairly wet Martini spritzed with soda water. A Martini on the rocks with a touch of soda is a Martini for the moderate drinker – even when you’re done the ice gives itself away to the drink over time.
In quarantine you are the bartender. There are no bad drinks in quarantine. There are only home lessons in mixology, and that is a skill which will deliver you joy for years to come. Of all the modern luxuries Shakespeare didn’t enjoy during his two-year isolation lockdown, the Martini is probably the one he would’ve liked the most. If you have a burning question about an ingredient substitution (or other cocktail questions) please email firstname.lastname@example.org and we’ll talk you through your options.
