The John Bell Scholarship supports emerging performers from regional Australia to pursue a career in the performing arts. Last month, we welcomed the four recipients to Bell Shakespeare HQ for their week of training and mentorship. The recipients this year were Wajanoah Donohoe from Canberra ACT, Rori Doherty from Port Stephens NSW, Safiah Sawal from Wagga Wagga NSW and Angus O'Farrell from Macedon VIC.

They worked with our Founding Artistic Director John Bell and Artistic Director Peter Evans, undertook acting masterclasses and training, observed Julius Caesar rehearsals and took excursions to see Shakespeare on screen. To conclude the week, they performed a devised work along with monologues from Much Ado About Nothing, Coriolanus and Othello. The audience of Bell Shakespeare staff, the cast and creatives of Julius Caesar and John Bell himself were all incredibly impressed by how talented this cohort of budding actors are.

This week gave me a new found sense of direction, and confidence. It made me feel like my dreams were not unattainable, and made me excited to pursue this career path. I feel like this was my first opportunity to be 100% myself.

The John Bell Scholarship has helped prepare me for a career in the performing arts by making me understand clearly the standards that the actors are held to in the rehearsal room, expectations on learning lines, how actors work together in the space, and how to work well in collaboration with creatives as well.

This scholarship has given me an even footing with students living in metro areas who can readily access professional acting programs. It has also given me a much clearer pathway to making an acting career a reality.
