Thanks to the generous support of the Scully Fund, Bell Shakespeare has been able to deliver our learning initiatives in regional and remote areas for more than ten years.

In April and May 2021, The Players spent two weeks in regional and remote areas of New South Wales. Team Judith visited far West NSW to schools in Broken Hill, Wilcannia, Cobar, Bourke and Nyngan. Team Hamnet visited the far South Coast of NSW, to schools in Mallacoota, Eden, Quaama, Narooma, Batemans Bay and Ulladulla.

Here are some snapshots from the tour:

“There were literal shrieks and cackles of laughter, with many children completely losing it!” – Team Hamnet, Quaama Public School

“The drama teacher got up at the start of the show to tell a story of how he saw Bell Shakespeare when he was in year ten and he has never forgotten how awesome it was.” – Team Hamnet, Ulladulla Public School

“This show will be a memory that we will cherish for the rest of our lives. We had 90 members of the community, from the youngest to the oldest, all packed into a small community hall. All of them loved it. We had a whole host of cackles and giggles for every joke. The Shakespeare puns were a hit with those more familiar with his work. The young ones couldn’t help but yell out about the story, including one young girl who kept telling Andy to just sit down and be quiet. When the bows finally came, we couldn’t wipe the grins off our faces. We were lucky enough to have some food and drinks with members of the community after the show. We had a wonderful home cooked meal (from the house garden) and excellent conversation. What a special night and what an incredible community.” – Team Hamnet, Mallacoota Community Clubrooms

The Players tour to schools nationally making Shakespeare’s work exciting and accessible. This program is only made possible through generosity of our supporters. If you would like to help us give life changing opportunities to regional students, please consider donating to our Sharing Shakespeare giving program. A donation of $100 gives one student the opportunity to participate in a John Bell Scholarship audition masterclass and a donation of $12,500 covers the cost of one scholarship.
