Noongar Shakespeare Project
We believe Shakespeare and other great works are not stuck in the past. They are the lens through which we can explore and question the present and imagine our future.
Bell Shakespeare are proud to partner with Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company as they work on an educational cultural language program that includes the development and presentation of a full-length adaptation and translation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth in Noongar language. Noongar is an endangered language, with less than 400 fluent speakers within the Noongar nation.
Since 2017 Bell Shakespeare has been working with Yirra Yaakin on the creative development of this project in what will become Australia’s first full-scale Indigenous interpretation of a major Shakespearean work for the stage. In March 2019, Associate Director of Bell Shakespeare James Evans, visited Yirra Yaakin for further creative development sessions.
