To Thine Own Self Be True
Online Leadership and Communication Workshops
Challenge the way you see the world and explore leadership and presentation skills through the lens of Shakespeare’s timeless plays. To Thine Own Self Be True is a series of online workshops that over three weeks will develop your leadership and communication skills in a style that is true to you. With a focus on presenting in both physical and online environments, these professional development workshops are perfect for young professionals looking to improve their skills, or those looking for a refresh. Delivered via Zoom, and facilitated by Bell Shakespeare’s Associate Director James Evans, with actors Jack Crumlin (Hamlet) and Emma Jackson (Macbeth).
SESSION 1: LEADERSHIP LESSONS FROM SHAKESPEARE
What makes a good leader? This interactive session will examine the values, qualities and behaviours of successful and unsuccessful leaders in Shakespeare and how these relate to the workplace. A combination of performance (by Bell Shakespeare actors) and discussion, participants will be encouraged to reflect on their own behaviour and leadership style.
SESSION 2: LANGUAGE, COMMUNICATION AND SPEECHMAKING
A practical, skills-based session including exercises on presence and holding the attention of a group in both a physical and online setting. Exercises will be based on the St Crispin’s Day speech from Henry V. How can we use language to influence, inspire and unite?
SESSION 3: PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF LESSONS FROM WEEKS 1 & 2
This session will bring together ideas and skills learned in the first two sessions to guide participants in the creation and delivery of a short speech on a topic of each participant’s choosing. This exercise will help to apply, practice and reinforce the lessons learned in the first two weeks in a relaxed environment, with the opportunity for feedback from the program facilitators and other participants.
