VENUS & ADONIS

Deep within the heart of Shakespeare’s most celebrated poem lies a warning to all seducers. Venus, the Goddess of Love, lures the beautiful Adonis into her embrace, but her advances are rejected and she is left to face abandonment.

Shift... 2010! We find our Venus where the wild things are; caged within the paper-thin walls of an anonymous hotel room, pacing – promising all the things that love can’t buy. Is she a Goddess or is this a delicious game of make-believe?

The world premiere of Venus & Adonis was performed in the Beckett Theatre, CUB Malthouse, on 16 April 2008. In 2009, Bell Shakespeare co-presented a Sydney season with Sydney Theatre Company as part of its Next Stage programme, prior to the production being invited to New Zealand as part of the 2009 Auckland Festival. This award winning production has received rave reviews and is available for further seasons both nationally and internationally.

Venus & Adonis is the inaugural production of Mind’s Eye, Bell Shakespeare’s research and development arm.
