THE WREATH
by Kate Mulvany

Over the years, it has come to my attention how rare it is to see women of a 'certain age' onstage. The women I adore and have been inspired by as an artist seem to disappear after the age of 45, and for the life of me, I can't work out why. These women have lives, scars, histories and futures that are potent, rich and extraordinary.

Add to this the fact that my favourite play is Hamlet and Ophelia and Gertrude my two favourite characters, and a new idea for a play was set in motion through the wonderful Mind's Eye initiative.

Under Gertrude's watchful eye and with Ophelia's garland of flowers in mind, I have created The Wreath. It is a new play for our brilliant Australian actresses and one that will delve deep into the most sacred of secret women’s business - the Order of the Amaranth - the female version of the Freemasons. I look forward to folding back the petals with you and seeing what's underneath.
